Intermediate Timber Frame: Trusses and Purlins

Course Description

Students will build a 14' x 20' principle rafter timber frame under the guidance of professional, experienced timber framers. Content will include:
  • Working from shop drawings
  • Layout techniques and cutting procedures
  • Layout and timber cutting skills to improve speed and accuracy
  • Cutting and fitting timber trusses
  • Traditional mortise and tenon joinery
  • Fitting and assembling a hammer beam and king post trusses
  • Raising a principle rafter frame
  • Proper use of hand and power tools including safe operation and storage

Overview

  • Frame will be constructed from 6"x 8" and 6"x 10" pine timbers.
  • Beams will come from the planing mill dressed 4 sides.
  • Students will layout, cut, and assemble the frame.
  • Hammer beam middle bent
  • King post construction on gable ends

Requirements

  • Completion of Gibson Timber Frames Introduction to Timber Framing course or similar training/experience.
  • CSA certified footwear
  • Safety glasses, hearing protection
  • Hard hat, work gloves
  • 16' tape measure, 24" framing square
